As spring approaches, we always seem to anticipate the re-emergence of life as the weather warms and the days become longer. Nature’s dreary canvas fades under her easel’s explosion of color. In the plastic surgery realm, our phones seem to ring continuously with prospective patients wanting to get ready for summer’s minimalist wardrobe and bikinis. Another constant in the spring for us is the American Society of Plastic Surgeons release of the prior year’s plastic surgery statistics which includes the top-performed procedures as well as what’s trending in the United States. I’ll highlight some of the results. The top five cosmetic surgical procedures in descending order are: Breast Augmentation, Liposuction, Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), and Facelift. Facelift this year beat out last year’s number 5-Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). In addition, the number of procedures performed for each category in 2016 was higher than in 2015. Another interesting fact in the report is that 85% of breast augmentations performed in 2016 were with silicone implants compared to 15% with saline implants. For non-surgical procedures the top five are Botox, Soft-tissue Fillers (such as Juvederm and Restylane), Chemical Peels, Laser Hair Removal, and Microdermabrasion. These were the same from last year. With regard to trends, the surgical procedure with the largest surge from 2015 to 2016 was Labiaplasty, which is the surgical reshaping or reduction of the labia minora or inner lips of a woman’s genitalia. Buttock Augmentation with fat grafting (Brazilian Butt Lift) continues to show a strong upward trend as well. The release of these statistics also reminds me to remind you that spring is an ideal time to have plastic surgery so that you’ll be well healed and looking great for the summer.
