Plastic surgeons and dermatologists spend a lot of time with patients who are searching for more youthful skin and we certainly have a wide variety of tools and products to help. I’ve written previous blogs on various treatments we can perform to improve the facial skin including Obagi NuDerm products, Botox, wrinkle fillers like Juvederm and Restylane, microneedling, CO2 laser resurfacing, etc. I always counsel patients about the detrimental effects of the environment, and I’m always dumbfounded at people who want a magic bullet to reverse their aging face, but continue to smoke and go to the tanning bed regularly. You don’t have to spend a fortune to improve the way your face looks, and in fact you can actually save money by making a few lifestyle changes that will reverse the effects of time.
A study in The British Journal of Dermatology followed nearly 1000 age 45-75 year old men and women over time to quantify the effects of lifestyle on facial aging. Basically the researchers found that smoking, tanning, and poor oral hygiene made the subjects appear about 10 years older (Wow!) than those who did not smoke, tan, and had good oral hygiene. Now that’s a significant difference. I figure for someone who smokes a pack a day at about $7 a pack could save about $2500 a year. Not only will smoking cessation and dropping the tanning salon membership slow the aging of your face, but the money you’re saving can easily pay for fillers, Botox, and other treatments at your plastic surgeon’s office to really make great improvements.
